Dorothy Marie Berning (Daniel)
Dorothy Marie Berning, age 92, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Wednesday, January 3 , 2018.
Born in 1925, Dorothy was raised in Streator, Illinois. She attended Concordia University, River Forest, Chicago. She taught school at St. Luke’s Lutheran School in Oviedo, FL and Zion Lutheran School in Fort Wayne, IN. She worked at Homestead High School in Fort Wayne from 1979 to 1999.
In 1950 she married Henry F. Berning and together they raised seven children and were active lifetime members of St. Michael Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne, IN. She was an avid sports fan, she loved reading, knitting, and supporting and encouraging her grandchildren. She will be remembered for her kind spirit and her devotion to faith and family.
Surviving are her children Henry Berning, Daniel (Nancy) Berning, Michael (Denise) Berning, Janet (Eric) Olson, Jean (Mark) Bienz, and Kent Berning; daughter-in-law Linda Berning; grandchildren Jennifer, Greg, Rita, Christopher, Lindsay, Ben, Amanda, John, Lauren, Brian, Katherine, and Emily; great grandchildren Nathaniel and Josiah; and sister Elaine Schlie. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry F. Berning; son, Thomas Berning; parents, Reverend John and Anna Daniel; and brothers, Jack Daniel and Reverend Robert Daniel.
Funeral service is 4 p.m., Saturday, January 6, 2018 Covington Memorial Gardens with visitation from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Michael Lutheran Church, 2131 Getz Rd, Fort Wayne, IN 46804 or to Lutheran Life Villages, 6723 S.
